WOLFRAM & HART- LAB- DAY ANGEL and WESLEY stand in Fred's old office and look down into the lab where ILLYRIA stands motionless, staring silently at the wall. WESLEY She's either counting oxygen molecules or analyzing the petri dish she just put into her mouth... or sleeping. I can never quite tell. ANGEL Are you sure this is a good idea? WESLEY We have plenty of petri dishes. ANGEL I meant- WESLEY I know what you meant. ANGEL You don't have to do this all yourself. WESLEY Who else is there? We're running out of people, Angel. We're getting no further with Gunn- ANGEL I am not leaving Gunn in a hell dimension. We'll get him out. In the meantime, I need you to let us help you with her. WESLEY She's my responsibility. ANGEL She's our responsibility and if she's going to be here, there are things we should be doing- testing her powers, studying her. (beat) She put a whole petri dish in her mouth? WESLEY Illyria can be... difficult. Testing her might be hard without getting someone seriously hurt. ANGEL We'll make Spike do it. WESLEY Good. (beat) She doesn't understand our world. She needs someone to guide her. She needs- ANGEL When was the last time you slept? You're not her savior. I need you here, working, not off drinking yourself into a coma, chasing ghosts. Fred's dead, Wes. You're still alive. Start acting like it. CUT TO: 2 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- WESLEY'S OFFICE- DAY A distraught couple, LAURENCE and COLLEEN REILLY, sit across the desk from Wesley, telling him their story. LAURENCE We had nowhere else to go. Our son was getting the mail. COLLEEN We could see him from the living room. He was walking across the driveway and this van- LAURENCE It must have been going 50 or 60 miles an hour. It hopped the curb and it ran right into him. It slammed him right into the side of the garage and then backed up and sped off. WESLEY And the police think this was intentional? Has Homicide found the van? LAURENCE You don't understand. COLLEEN Our son's not dead. WESLEY He's not? LAURENCE No. He's fine. The van hit him and he got right up. COLLEEN He hardly has a scratch on him. LAURENCE The police said it was dumb luck but if you saw it... COLLEEN One of the officers called us later, said our son might be different. LAURENCE He mentioned that there was a law firm in Los Angeles that dealt with... things like this. Wesley picks up the phone and dials. WESLEY (into phone) Harmony, would you ask Angel to come in here please? COLLEEN Our son's downstairs. He thinks that we're here to set up a trust. LAURENCE We didn't know what else to tell him. COLLEEN Please, will you help us? WESLEY Of course. CUT TO: 3 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ATRIUM- DAY Angel walks across the atrium heading for Wesley's office. He stops in his tracks when he hears a familiar voice. CONNOR (o.s.) Hey, dad! Angel turns to find his son CONNOR standing by the elevators, looking right at him. Opening credit sequence. ACT I 4 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ATRIUM- DAY Resume. Angel stares at Connor in shock. ANGEL What? What are you... CONNOR Dad? LAURENCE Yeah, it's okay. Come on over. Angel turns and realizes Connor wasn't looking at him but past him over his shoulder at Laurence waving to him from Wesley's office. Angel's steps aside as Connor walks past. CONNOR You know, they have dried scorpions in the vending machines downstairs. WESLEY Angel, good. This is Laurence and Colleen Reilly and this is their son. CONNOR Connor. Hi. Nice to meet you. WESLEY The Reillys need to talk about some issues regarding Connor here and I thought we could- ANGEL No. WESLEY What? ANGEL I'm sorry. There must be some mistake. We can't help you. He turns and walks off, leaving Wesley to deal with the Reillys. CUT TO: 5 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ANGEL'S OFFICE- DAY Angel stares out the window of his office at Connor standing across the atrium with his parents. WESLEY A van ran him down. He got up and walked away, unharmed. ANGEL How did they find us? WESLEY A police officer mentioned our name, said we might be able to help. ANGEL We're not taking this case. WESLEY Why not? ANGEL Because with everything going on, we don't have time to be dealing with small stuff like this. WESLEY Small stuff? This is what we do... or what we're supposed to do. They need help. They seem like good people. ANGEL All the more reason to get them out of here. We know what this place does to good people. CUT TO: 6 INT. PURGATORY- GUNN'S HOUSE- BASEMENT- DAY The hulking demon rips out GUNN's heart and drops it with all the others on the pile at the end of the table, then walks off into the shadows. After a beat, the ragged hole in Gunn's chest miraculously seals itself and the blood soaking his clothes evaporates. He sits up with a gasp, confused. GUNN Who was it... what am I... I was looking for something... The demon hands him a light bulb for the oven and a sudden calm washes over him as he heads back upstairs, calling out to his wife as he goes. GUNN It's okay. Found it. CUT TO: 7 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- TRAINING ROOM- DAY SPIKE flies across the room and lands on his back. Illyria looks down at him with disdain. ILLYRIA You break so easily. Spike rubs his jaw and gets to his feet. ILLYRIA Why do you bother getting back up? SPIKE Right. We need to set some ground rules. First off, no more punching me in the face. Secondly, when I punch you in the face, you tell me how you feel so I can write that down on my clipboard. Third, no touching my clipboard. Fourth- ILLYRIA I enjoy hurting you. SPIKE Well, we're going to have to fix that 'cause- She kicks him in the head. Furious, Spike punches her in the face. She smiles and backhands him, hurling him 30 feet across the room. The door opens and Wesley enters. He looks down at Spike sprawled on the floor, then over at Illyria. WESLEY How goes it? ILLYRIA I've been hitting the half-breed. He makes noise. SPIKE We're off to a bit of a rough start but don't worry. I'll break her. WESLEY She's not a horse, Spike. You know, this room is equipped with automated training devices. You don't have to test her by just allowing her to pummel you. SPIKE We're working on the basics. But don't worry, I'm writing it all down. He points proudly at his clipboard. WESLEY Okay, fine. ILLYRIA You reek of frustration. It curls off of you like smoke. SPIKE Actually, luv, we call that scotch. A 12-year Laguvilin, if I'm not mistaken. Good choice. Wesley ignores him. WESLEY It's nothing. I just... I had a slight disagreement with Angel. SPIKE Ah, old broody-pants got you wound up, eh? Keep in mind, he can't get laid without maybe going crazy. Makes it funny. ILLYRIA In my time, a leader would punish your insolence with death. WESLEY We're not being insolent, Illyria. SPIKE I am. WESLEY It's just... I don't always understand Angel. ILLYRIA Yet you follow him willingly. You're loyal to him. WESLEY He's earned it. I trust he knows what he's doing. CUT TO: 8 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ANGEL'S OFFICE- DAY Angel paces his office, then turns, furious, as MARCUS HAMILTON enters. ANGEL What the hell is going on? HAMILTON Angel. I'm at your disposal. ANGEL My son walks in through my door! HAMILTON And you make him walk right out again. I found that interesting. ANGEL I want him as far away from here as possible. HAMILTON Yes. But it might have been smart to get some information out of him first. It could help us understand what's happening. Angel gets right up in his face. ANGEL Tell you what, why don't you just tell me? HAMILTON Let's be clear about this. Things run differently now. I'm not a little girl and you and I won't be making love on this couch any time soon. Now with that in mind, how can I help you? Angel walks over and closes the office door. ANGEL The senior partners and I had a deal. HAMILTON Yes, you did. They took your son- your raging, psychopathic son- gave him a new family, changed his memories- changed everyone's memories, actually- in order to give him a new life, a normal life. ANGEL And I came to work here. HAMILTON And we couldn't be happier. The senior partners honor their deals. And believe me, they have no desire to upset such a profitable partnership. ANGEL So this is just an... unfortunate coincidence? HAMILTON Oh, no, I didn't say that. I said the senior partners weren't behind it. This isn't an accident. Someone out there's trying to send you a message... and they're using your son to do it. CUT TO: 9 INT. LOS ANGELES STREETS- REILLY'S CAR- NIGHT Connor and his parents head for their motel. COLLEEN Where are we supposed to go now? LAURENCE I'm sure there's someone else who can... handle our trust. CONNOR Just so you know, you guys don't have to keep pretending. I know we were there because of the van thing. COLLEEN I'm sorry, honey. It's just it was- CONNOR It's cool. I mean, my parents are liars and I can never trust them again but it's cool. Look, I know you guys are worried but the whole point is I'm okay. I got hit and I'm okay. That should make you happy, not like... you know, mental patients. I mean, it turned out fine. Laurence turns into the parking lot of their motel and pulls into a space. LAURENCE It's the getting hit part. We thought you were dead. CONNOR Hey, have some faith in me. LAURENCE Connor... CONNOR All right. Look, you guys, I'm not saying this isn't weird and all but we'll get through it. You don't have to be scared. Suddenly the door of the car is ripped off its hinges and a hulking demon yanks Connor out and throws him to the pavement. Two more demons surround the car and attack his parents. Colleen screams in terror as Laurence tries to help Connor. LAURENCE Get off him! The demon backhands Connor and kicks him to the ground again. The other two push Colleen up against hood of the car. She shrieks with fright. CONNOR Mom! He leaps to his feet and punches the creature as hard as he can. He stares in shock as the blow launches the beast 50 feet across the parking lot where it lands in a crumpled heap on the roof of a parked car. Connor looks down at his hands in amazement. CONNOR Whoa! Before he can give it more thought, a second demon leaps over the car and tackles him to the ground. It yanks him up by the neck and runs him headfirst into the door of a pickup truck. Connor falls to the ground dazed and looks up at the snarling demon looming over him. As the creature moves in for the kill, Angel leaps out of the shadows and catches it full in the chest with a powerful kick. Angel faces off between the two remaining demons, then attacks, his fists and feet flying. He flips one of the demons up and over his head, slamming him down on the roof of the pickup truck with a bone-crunching thud. He quick snaps the creature's neck, then charges the lone survivor. They trade a series of blows before Angel spots his opening and seizes the beast, lifts it over his head and brings it down on his knee, shattering its spine. Angel turns to Connor who stares at him in open-mouthed shock. CONNOR Oh, my god... ANGEL Connor, listen to me... CONNOR You almost broke that guy in half! (beat) That was awesome! FADE OUT ACT II 10 EXT. MOTEL PARKING LOT- NIGHT Resume. Connor stares at Angel in awe. CONNOR Seriously, that was the coolest thing I've ever seen. ANGEL Well, it's not a big deal. I mean, I do stuff like that a lot. There was this one time in France- COLLEEN (o.s.) Connor! Connor looks over at his mother helping Laurence to his feet, a bloody gash in his forehead. CONNOR Dad! LAURENCE I'm okay. COLLEEN We need to get him to a hospital. ANGEL We've got doctors at Wolfram & Hart. We can help. (to Connor) You and I have some things we should probably talk about. Connor looks down at the dead demons and nods. CONNOR Yeah, I kinda figured. CUT TO: 11 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- CORRIDOR- NIGHT Angel walks with Connor through the halls on the building's lower levels. ANGEL Your dad's going to be fine. He's in good hands. Or claws, as the case may be. They're good doctors. CONNOR What were those things that attacked us? ANGEL Some kind of demon. I'm looking into it. Connor stops walking. CONNOR Is that what I am? Some kind of demon? ANGEL No. CONNOR Then... what am I? ANGEL Best we can tell, you're a healthy, well-adjusted kid. With enhanced abilities. CONNOR And you're a vampire? (Angel nods) So... demons, vampires, doctors with claws and I'm some sort of superhero. (beat) Okay. ANGEL You're taking this pretty well. CONNOR What am I supposed to do? Complain? I just don't know how to explain it to my parents. You got family? ANGEL No. CONNOR Right. Vampire. So what are you, like 500 years old? ANGEL No I'm- do I look 500? CONNOR Do you spend all your time making out with other vampires like in Anne Rice novels? ANGEL No. I used to but- CONNOR Do you have a girlfriend, at least? ANGEL I can't afford to. CONNOR Must be lonely. ANGEL I keep busy. CONNOR Right. So do you guys like fight crime and save the world here? That sort of stuff? ANGEL Well, that's the idea. CONNOR Wow. Is everyone here a superhero? This place must be insane. ANGEL It's mostly paralegals and secretaries. Pretty boring, really. The door in front of them crashes open and Spike flies across the hall and slams into the wall, followed closely by his clipboard. SPIKE You filthy harlot! I'm going to tear your neck out! He gets up and stalks back into the training room. Angel sighs and looks awkwardly at Connor. ANGEL You want to meet some of my co-workers? CONNOR Okay... Angel pushes the door open and peers in at Illyria, who has Spike pinned to the floor by the head under her leather boot. Angel walks in with Connor and motions to Illyria and Spike. 12 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- TRAINING ROOM- NIGHT ANGEL Guys, you want to come here for a second? Illyria takes her foot off Spike's head and he gets to his feet with a surly scowl. Connor stares at Illyria in wonder. CONNOR What is she? ANGEL She's a... well, to be honest, I really don't know. She's some sort of ancient demon. CONNOR Does she have any powers? SPIKE Glad you asked. So far I've established that she can hit like a Mack truck, selectively alter the flow of time and... possibly talk to plants. ILLYRIA (to Angel) I'd like to keep Spike as my pet. ANGEL Connor, this is Spike and Illyria. Guys, this is Connor. CONNOR Hi. (to Illyria) I like your outfit. ILLYRIA Your body warms. (to Angel) This one is lusting after me. CONNOR (embarrassed) Oh... no... it's just the outfit. (laughs) I guess I've always had a thing for older women. ANGEL (sotto) They were supposed to fix that. CONNOR What? ANGEL Nothing. (to Spike) Connor has brought us a case. We're looking into it, just showing him around. LORNE enters with a smile. Connor stares at the green-skinned demon, amazed. LORNE Hey, you kids playing in the training room? CONNOR Whoa! Man, this place is way better than college. LORNE Yeah. Ange-babe, Wes is requesting your presence upstairs. He has a little demon info for your peepers. Angel and Lorne turn to go with Connor following. He waves to Spike and Illyria. CONNOR It was nice meeting you. ANGEL (nonchalant) You're in college? CONNOR Yeah. ANGEL Where at? CONNOR Stanford. Angel tries to suppress a smile. ANGEL Really? CUT TO: 13 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ANGEL'S OFFICE- NIGHT Wesley sorts through a series of photographs of the same type of demons that attacked Connor and his family. ANGEL That's them. WESLEY Kith'harn demons. In Los Angeles, they're the known henchmen of a warlock called Cyvus Vail. ANGEL What do we know about him? LORNE He's powerful. Heads up a large demon empire. Has tendrils stretching throughout L.A. ANGEL Tendril tendrils? LORNE Metaphor tendrils. CONNOR What does he want with me? WESLEY If he's using his Kith'harn demons, he's not trying to remain anonymous. Angel drops the pictures and heads for the door. WESLEY Where are you going? ANGEL To go visit Mr. Vail. CONNOR I'll come with. ANGEL No. You're here. WESLEY Angel we know hardly anything about this man. If he's trying to bait you- ANGEL It's not up for discussion. WESLEY At least take backup- ANGEL I said I'd take care of it, Wes! Drop it. He turns and leaves. Wesley and Lorne share an uneasy look. CUT TO: 14 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- WESLEY'S OFFICE- NIGHT Wesley enters and goes to his desk. After a moment, he picks up the phone and dials. WESLEY (into phone) Get me everything you can on Cyvus Vail. CUT TO: 15 INT. VAIL MANSION- GREAT ROOM- NIGHT CYVUS VAIL sits wheezing in the center of the otherwise empty room in a large high-backed chair. He's an ancient, red-skinned demon, withered and frail, with IV tubes trailing from his body to a bank of medical equipment and fluid dispensers. He looks up as one of his Kith'harn demons flies across the room and slides to a stop, dead, at his feet. Angel appears in the door and stares intently at Vail. VAIL Did you kill all of my guards? ANGEL All the ones I could find. VAIL Hmm... I should have given them the day off. (beat) I wasn't trying to kill your son, you know. I simply needed him to understand what he is capable of. ANGEL How do you know about Connor? VAIL I built him. CUT TO: 16 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- WESLEY'S OFFICE- NIGHT HARMONY enters, walks past Lorne who is perusing a set of musty tomes, and sets a stack of files down on Wesley's desk. HARMONY These are everything the clerk had on Vail and... this was down wandering around Human Resources. Illyria enters and fixes Wesley with her cerulean blue gaze. ILLYRIA Spike is resting. WESLEY Thank you, Harmony. LORNE Here we go. Vail listings under "accounts paid". WESLEY Wolfram & Hart did business with him? LORNE Yeah. It looks like he was one of their go-to warlocks when it came to the magickal mojo. (reads) Specialized in memory restructuring, mind control, temporal shifts... oh, boy. WESLEY What is it? LORNE You could buy Bolivia for what we paid him on this one. Wesley gets up and looks at the records. WESLEY Not just him. He supervised some of the most powerful sorcerers on the West Coast. LORNE Manpower like that, I'm guessing he wasn't doing card tricks. WESLEY Some sort of reality shift and... oh. LORNE What? WESLEY It happened on the day we took over Wolfram & Hart. CUT TO: 17 INT. VAIL MANSION- GREAT ROOM- NIGHT Vail holds out his hand to Angel. VAIL Could you help me up? I'd have one of my guards do it but... well, you know. Angel takes his arm and lifts him to his feet. VAIL Thank you. Angel rips the IV tube from Vail's chest and seizes him by the throat. The sickly demon chokes and starts reciting facts, as if by rote. VAIL When Connor was five, he got lost in a department store. He wandered off while his family was shopping. It scared the poor child nearly half to death. ANGEL That never happened. VAIL Yes, but he remembers it happening. Shocked, Angel releases his grip on Vail's throat. The warlock falls back into his chair and quickly reattaches the IV. VAIL He remembers screaming in the middle of the store. He remembers his mother rushing toward him. And he remembers his father sweeping him up into his arms. ANGEL (realizes) You built his memories. VAIL I did. He is some of my finest work. ANGEL What do you want? VAIL I need someone dead. A demon... named Sahjahn. ANGEL Sahjahn... VAIL I believe you tussled with him before. He's a nasty little cur! ANGEL He's gone. I trapped him in a bottle. VAIL An urn, actually. He walks over to a small cabinet and opens it to reveal the urn in question. VAIL It's a morbid thing. Doesn't really go with my d���cor. ANGEL He's trapped. Let him rot. VAIL Urns tend to break. Long-lost enemies tend to return. I need finality to my affairs. He raises his right hand, palm up and gestures with his left. A small glowing cube appears. VAIL Do you know what an Orlon Window is, Angel? It's a fascinating little spell. It allows warlocks such as myself to see the past as it once was. You have to be careful with it, though. If it were to break around someone whose mind had been altered, then all his old memories would come rushing back. Angel takes a menacing step forward. VAIL Careful, Angel! I gave Connor his happy life. Are you certain you can kill me before I can take it away from him? He waves his hand again and the cube disappears. VAIL I built your son. I am not the sort of man you want as an enemy. Angel stares at the urn for a beat, then turns and faces Vail. ANGEL Fine. I'll do it. I'll kill Sahjahn. VAIL If it were that simple, I'd do it myself. No, the prophecy is quite clear. There is only one person who can kill Sahjahn. ANGEL Connor... VAIL So... you see our problem. I turned your son into a healthy boy and now I need you to turn him back into a killer. FADE OUT ACT III 18 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ANGEL'S OFFICE- NIGHT Angel paces the room while Wesley and Connor look on. CONNOR He wants me to kill somebody? ANGEL A demon, named Sahjahn. We've fought him before. CONNOR Why me? Why do I have to do it? ANGEL Because you're special. There's a prophecy that says you're the only one who can kill him. WESLEY Why are we even entertaining this? ANGEL Vail's made some convincing threats. WESLEY Since when do we give in to threats? CONNOR He's not threatening you. He's threatening my family. WESLEY We can't trust anything from Vail. Angel, he did a massive spell the day we took over Wolfram & Hart. Until we understand why- CONNOR Is he pretty strong, this Sahjahn? WESLEY That's a bit of an understatement. (to Angel) Last time you fought him, Sahjahn nearly killed you. CONNOR Is that true? ANGEL This is different. Like I said, you're special. CONNOR We don't have a choice, do we? WESLEY Of course we have a choice. We just need time to figure out what Vail did. ANGEL We don't have time. CONNOR If I kill Sahjahn, Vail will leave my family alone? Angel nods. CONNOR What are we waiting for? Angel leads Connor out, barely sparing Wesley a glance. CUT TO: 19 INT. PURGATORY- GUNN'S HOUSE- BASEMENT- DAY The massive demon steps back from the blast furnace with a hot poker, it's tip an angry, glowing orange. On the table, Gunn coughs on his own blood and pleads weakly. GUNN Please... please... I'll do whatever you want, please! No... no! The demon seizes Gunn and raises the poker high to strike, then freezes as Marcus Hamilton appears at the head of the stairs. He gestures to the demon. HAMILTON Sorry to interrupt. I'll just need a minute. The demon steps back without a word and Hamilton walks over to Gunn. He rips the magickal pendant from around Gunn's neck and he sits up, with a wheezing moan as all his memories flood back. Hamilton points to a metal lattice covered with hooks hanging on the wall. HAMILTON Do you know what this thing is? It's a gibbet. Has he put you in it yet? Gunn shakes his head, too weak to speak. HAMILTON Well, he'll get around to it. Eventually, he gets around to everything down here. (beat) Mr. Gunn, I'm Marcus Hamilton, your new liaison to the senior partners. I have a proposition for you. GUNN Oh, yeah? HAMILTON Yes. It occurs to us that you might want to get out of here. We can help with that. You know, I've been by your offices, seen your friends. Strange, there's not much activity on the "rescue Gunn" front. We're not asking you for much. All we need you to do- GUNN Can I have my necklace back? Hamilton stares at him expressionlessly for a beat, then holds up the pendant. Gunn grabs it, then looks back at the demon before tying it around his neck once again. GUNN Come on, sparky, let's go. This heart ain't going to cut itself out. HAMILTON Thank you for your time. He turns and walks back up the stairs as the demon steps forward with his poker and goes to work. CUT TO: 20 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- TRAINING ROOM- NIGHT Angel stands across from Connor in the training room, giving him pointers on how to fight. ANGEL You're not alone in this. I'll be right there with you. CONNOR Are you going to hold Sahjahn down while I stab him? ANGEL The prophecy doesn't say you can't have a little help. CONNOR That hardly seems fair. ANGEL Fair's not something we worry about. CONNOR Maybe you should. I'm not a bully. If I'm going to do this, you gotta let me do it my way. Now I just gotta figure out what my way is. ANGEL You'll have your whole life for that. CONNOR Might as well start now. ANGEL All right, well let me show you a few things. CONNOR Well... yeah. I may be all noble and stuff but I'm not an idiot. I've been in one fight my entire life and you bailed me out of it. (points to the weapons) Should I take one of these with me? Maybe an axe or whatever this thing is. He pulls a scythe from the wall and ends up knocking over the rest of the weapons on the rack. He picks them up sheepishly. CONNOR Sorry. ANGEL It's okay. Probably stay away from the weapons for now. CONNOR (nods) Okay. Sorry. ANGEL Look, you're faster than Sahjahn. Use it. He talks a lot. He'll try and lull you into slowing down. Don't listen. Hit him quick, keep moving. CONNOR Do you really think I can do this? ANGEL I know you can. CUT TO: 21 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ARCHIVES- NIGHT Illyria follows Wesley into the vast archives and watches as he searches for the right file cabinet. ILLYRIA You are so concerned with names, dates, times. WESLEY Reality's been changed. ILLYRIA Define change. The world is as it is. WESLEY Not necessarily. ILLYRIA You are a summation of recollections. Each change is simply a point of experience. WESLEY We are more than just memories. ILLYRIA And yet Fred changed the moment her memory did. Wesley stops and looks up at Illyria. WESLEY Fred's memories were changed? ILLYRIA In places. WESLEY Can you see what they were before? ILLYRIA No. They're gone. Does this change your view of Fred? Is she still the person you thought she was? Wesley finds the file folder he's looking for and scans it. WESLEY No. None of us are. He drops the folder and walks out. Inside, is a contract with Angel's signature at the bottom. CUT TO: 22 INT. VAIL MANSION- GREAT ROOM- NIGHT Angel and Connor enter to find Vail shuffling toward them, trailing his IV cart. CONNOR This place smells like a retirement home. VAIL Welcome. I've been waiting for you. CONNOR (sotto) Oh, lord. Look at him. ANGEL Shh. Listen, Vail, we won't be staying long- CONNOR (to Vail) Here's how it works. I kill this Sahjahn thing and we walk. You come near my family again and I'll slit your throat. And if that doesn't kill you, I'll chop your whole head off... and if that doesn't work, I'll just keep stabbing you till you bleed to death. Understand? VAIL I do. CONNOR Good. So... where is he? VAIL Right through there. He points into the dining room, which appears empty save for the urn placed in the center of the table. CONNOR Okay. (to Angel) See you later. ANGEL Listen, he's going to talk to you. Don't let him distract you. CONNOR I won't. ANGEL Even if he's on the ground, do not take your eyes off him. CONNOR Okay. ANGEL And whatever you do, don't- CONNOR Dude, you're starting to freak me out. ANGEL Right. Sorry. I'll be right over here. Connor enters the dining room and circles the table, not sure what to do. CONNOR What am I supposed- He turns and finds a solid wall where the doorway was a moment before. CONNOR Okay... On the other side, there is no wall. Angel watches Connor, then turns to Vail questioningly. VAIL He can't see us any more. ANGEL Why not? VAIL I can't risk Sahjahn getting loose. He has a nasty habit of trying to kill me. But don't worry. Your boy is very brave. I'm sure he'll do you proud. Inside the dining room, Connor looks at the urn, considering. CONNOR Open sesame... or whatever. He pulls the plug and opens the vessel. Immediately a white, diaphanous stream flows out across the room and solidifies into SAHJAHN. He staggers slightly and catches his balance as he orients himself after being trapped for so long. He finally focuses on Connor. SAHJAHN Thank you, mortal, for releasing me from my cursed prison. In gratitude, I grant you three wishes. CONNOR Really? SAHJAHN Nah, I'm just messing with you. CONNOR Oh. SAHJAHN I do appreciate it, though. That urn wasn't exactly a day at the spa. I owe you one. CONNOR Right. Well, before you start trying to kiss me, I should probably tell you, you and I... we're supposed to fight. SAHJAHN Is that right? CONNOR Yeah. SAHJAHN Now why would you want- (realizes) Ah... you're him. CONNOR Yeah. I'm me. Hi. You can take a moment if you want. There's some weapons and stuff over here if you think you'll need them. SAHJAHN (wary) Thanks. Beyond the phantom wall, Angel watches intently, worried. ANGEL He's talking to him. Why is he talking to him? I told him not to talk to him. Inside the dining room, Sahjahn starts to slowly circle around the table while he talks. SAHJAHN It's been a while since we've seen each other. How did Quortoth work out for you, anyway? CONNOR (confused) Worked out great. Thanks for asking. SAHJAHN You know, I've had a long time to plan for this moment. I figured you'd be a lot more... intimidating. CONNOR Yeah, well... I figured I was going to Tony Roma's with my folks tonight but I'm here. Learn to cope. SAHJAHN I'll work on it. In the blink of an eye, he flings the urn across the table and into Connor's head. As the boy staggers and falls to the floor, Angel charges forward to help, only to be repelled by a magickal barrier. He spins around and shoots Vail a murderous look. VAIL Sorry. Not your fight. Inside, Connor gets to his feet, holding his jaw and wincing. CONNOR Ow! God, that really hurt. SAHJAHN Did it? CONNOR Yeah. SAHJAHN I'm sorry. Do you need to call a time out? CONNOR No, I'm all right. Sahjahn throws a punch but Connor ducks, then follows with a punch of his own. It connects but barely staggers Sahjahn. The demon lands a blow to Connor's head, sending him reeling. Outside, Angel paces nervously, then takes a menacing step toward Vail. ANGEL Open the doorway. Right now. The glowing cube suddenly appears in Vail's hand again, stopping Angel in his tracks. VAIL Or you'll what? Relax. Your son has to grow up sooner or later. Sit back and watch his future unfold. There's no need to bring back the past if we don't have to. In the dining room, Connor gets unsteadily to his feet as Sahjahn looms over him. He takes one punch to the face, then another. He tries to throw a punch of his own but Sahjahn casually blocks it and throws him into the wall. Connor lands a punch to Sahjahn's jaw, snapping his head back, but the demon quickly recovers and brings his arm down on Connor's back, driving him to the floor. SAHJAHN You know, I went through a lot of trouble to get rid of you. What a colossal waste of time that turned out to be. He kicks Connor across the room into the far wall. Outside, Angel can't take it any more. ANGEL Open it n- He stops when he sees that Vail's hand is empty; the glowing cube is gone. WESLEY (o.s.) You changed the world. Angel turns to find Wesley and Illyria standing in the doorway. The cube now rests in Wesley's hand and he stares hard at Angel. ANGEL Wes, what are you doing? WESLEY You sold us out to Wolfram & Hart. ANGEL Be careful... WESLEY Is this your 30 pieces of silver? ANGEL Wes... give me that. Illyria backhands Angel, the force of the blow sending him sailing through the air. He lands across the room and slides into the wall. ILLYRIA He doesn't follow you any longer. In the dining room, Sahjahn slams Connor down on the table, then pushes him off onto the floor. SAHJAHN These prophecies are turning out to be pretty overrated. I gotta tell you, kid. You're making a good case for the whole concept of free will. In the great room, Angel gets to his feet and confronts Wesley again. WESLEY You changed the world. ANGEL He's my son, Wesley. Connor's my son. Wesley is rocked by the news, then looks over at Illyria, the possibilities dawning on him. WESLEY Did you trade her? Did you trade Fred for your son? ANGEL What? WESLEY Everything that's happened since we took over Wolfram & Hart. Everything that's happened to... her. Did you know? Was Fred the price? ANGEL No, Wes. I can explain. Just put that down. WESLEY Why are you so afraid of this? He said it would bring back the past. Will it undo what you've done? ANGEL No. It won't bring her back. WESLEY Let's find out. He raises the cube over his head, ready to smash it on the floor. ANGEL No! Please... you have to trust me. WESLEY I can't. Not any more. He hurls the cube down at the floor and it shatters with a massive burst of light. All of the events of the past year pour back into Wesley's mind, slowly at first, then becoming a torrent of images. Starting with the birth of Connor, to Wesley's betrayal of Angel, his near death at the hands of Justine, Cordelia's possession and the intervention of Faith and Willow, ending with the emergence and defeat of Jasmine and Lilah Morgan's mysterious offer. FADE OUT ACT IV 23 INT. VAIL MANSION- GREAT ROOM- NIGHT Resume. Wesley looks at Angel in shock as the memories of a whole other life come back to him. Angel sees the knowledge in Wesley's eyes, then realizes the implication. ANGEL Connor... In the dining room, Sahjahn has Connor pinned to the table, his hands around the boy's throat. Suddenly, Connor's arm shoots up and his hand clamps around the demon's neck. He flips Sahjahn up and over his head, then leaps off the table and faces off with him. SAHJAHN Lucky shot. In one fluid motion, Connor somersaults over the table, snatching up a battle axe at the same time and attacks Sahjahn. The tables have turned. Now Connor beats back Sahjahn. The demon tries to fight back but he's no match for Connor as he lands a series of blows to the demon's head and chest with the axe handle. Connor spins around and buries the axe blade in Sahjahn's gut, then rips it out and whips it around for the killing blow. The blade connects with Sahjahn's neck, slicing cleaning through and decapitating him. Connor stares down at the demon's body as Angel rushes into the room. ANGEL Connor? CONNOR Whoa! You see that? I went a little hard-core there for a second. That guy made me really cranky. ANGEL Are you okay? CONNOR Yeah, I guess. I don't really like people touching my neck, you know? ANGEL Connor...? CONNOR Hey, can we get out of here? I'd like to go back, see my parents. This whole fighting thing... I'm not really sure it's for me. CUT TO: 24 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- WESLEY'S OFFICE- DAY Wesley stares out the window silently while Illyria walks the room like a caged tiger. ILLYRIA You betrayed Angel. You stole his son. He tried to kill you. WESLEY Yes. ILLYRIA Are these the memories you needed back? Does this now make you Wesley? WESLEY At least I know what happened. ILLYRIA Do you? There are two sets of memories. Those that happened and those that are fabricated. It's hard to tell which is which. WESLEY Try to push reality out of your mind. Focus on the other memories. They were created for a reason. ILLYRIA To hide from the truth? WESLEY To endure it. CUT TO: 25 INT. WOLFRAM & HART- ANGEL'S OFFICE- DAY Connor enters to find Angel staring out the window at the city skyline. CONNOR I thought sunlight burned you up? ANGEL (laughs) Special glass. CONNOR Cool. You should like make a whole suit out of it, like the Pope has. ANGEL How's your dad? CONNOR He's fine. They're releasing him now. I should warn you, he's pretty pissed. I told him that you took me out demon fighting and almost got me killed. He wants to have a talk with you. ANGEL All right, I'll- CONNOR I'm kidding! Man, you gotta lighten up. He thinks we spent the whole night doing tests. I told him I could bench-press like 1000 pounds. ANGEL What are you going tell them about... who you are? CONNOR The truth, more or less. I'll tell them that I'm different. I'll them that it's actually a good thing. I'll tell them to stop worrying so much. ANGEL Well, they're parents. CONNOR Yeah, I know. They'll feel a lot better knowing you're looking out for me. ANGEL We still haven't found Vail... but we will. CONNOR I'm not too worried about him. There's nothing he can show me that I haven't already seen. (beat) Anyway, I just wanted to say goodbye. I have to go back to my life now. He turns to go. ANGEL Do you really have to leave? I mean, right now? CONNOR I kinda think I should. I need to take care of my parents. This isn't their world. They really don't feel safe here. You gotta do what you can to protect your family. (pointed) I learned that from my father. FADE TO BLACK END
