The only real real choice she ever made was in going back to being human after being revengenced again. She never could cope with human life well. To think the show has a reputation for being fresh and innovative. Well, it did, anyway.

I agree. Since the show was cancelled they could have let her and Xander fall back in love and go off together. Or if they wanted to, they could have made it a real tear jerky. They could have had Xander and Anya get back together right before the fight and then have her die trying to save his life. It could have been a beautiful goodbye scene. But for some reason they wanted to end Buffy on a happy jokey note (the mall talk, etc.) ... so then why kill Anya.

I would've been just fine if they actually showed Anya dying the heroic death the "storyteller" says she had. As it was, it seemed to me the last thrust of her sword was towards some hardly seen enemy on the other side of the corridor from where Andrew was. Then she gets a bad guy's death (I guess Anyanka had to split too) and lies dead eyed, hidden from anyone that may care.
