2003-01-25 04:35:14-08:00 - My thoughts on Dawn (spoilers for Potential) - (rshiflet@hotmail.com)

Spoiler space for those who haven't seen Potential: c c c c c c c c c c c I felt sorry for Dawn in this episode, because she is left out. There are a dozen of teenage girls in the house with a bond that she can't be a part of. I don't see why it was a suprise to Willow, Xander, and Anya that she could be a Potential. The thought should have at least crossed her mind. Also, why did they tell her that now she is part of some big power like it would be something new? She WAS part of a big power (the Key) that could open portals. Seems more powerful than a slayer. I know - she can't remember being the key. Also, does anybody else think that she should get together with Andrew? Just because he was in love with Warren, doesn't mean he wouldn't fall for a girl. My husband had the idea that Dawn is cursed to be mundain. The monks created a normal girl and a normal girl is what she will always be. She could never be the prettiest in school (she should have tons of boys after her), she could never be a powerful witch (she can follow spells, but never be like Willow), and she'll never be a slayer. Anything that she tries to do that's extraordainary, she'll fail. Maybe her failing at cheerleading is an example. My idea is that she will become Key Girl(tm) and be more powerful than Buffy. Renee

I personally think that in this series, almost everything can happen to the characters. The part of Andrew is slowly going to change to fit in with the group. I expect him to 'grow up' a little during the next few episodes. He'll lose some part of his nerdiness. Being keft out is something that he and Dawn definetly do have in common, so why should they not sympathise with each other. Well after all i think that the writers do have a role and something special in mind for Dawn. During the first seasons Willow was a nerd too. And look how that turned out. And beeing normal does not seem to be too bad, when you are around the slayer in sunnydale. Where would Buffy be without her 'normal' friends who always gave her support when she needed it. (And killed some evil themselves if i do remember correctly)

Can't remember which one offhand; but I did notice that she was amused - and bestowed upon Andrew a glance with some surprising warmth to it. That may mean nothing, of course. I disagree, a future episode in Season 5, asked "why didn't they just make the key a toaster so it could be smashed and no threat to the world" or smething like that. The response was, the monks thought the key would become a powerful force for good.
