Right before spike and buffy went back to the initiative, spike said that they doped him up, I cant remember exactly what he said, but it didn't seem consistant with what actually took place. Spike didn't even know about the chip until he got out.

IIRC, Spike beat his way out of the Initiative without any pain -- the pain only started when he attacked Willow. Hmmm.
