1996-07-11 00:00:00 - IRC Conference Recap - (alantuck@usa.pipeline.com)

Since somebody will probably be asking anyway, the IRC conference went pretty smoothly. People came and went, but there were usually about 25 people present at any given time throughout, which lasted a little over two hours. Larry was his usual forthright/funny/sarcastic self (not necessarily in that order), most of the questions were pretty good, and no storms made CompuServe go on the fritz and into some sort of cosmic lag. All in all, it was enjoyable enough for me to lose over two hours of work I needed to get done, and to let my delivered "new" Pizza Hut chicken pizza get cold (my Galloping Gourmet recommendation: stick to the sausage and pepperoni). I just wish the Pipeline IRC interface was easier to use (hell, maybe it is), because I had no freakin' idea what I was doing. My couple of questions had little semblance to how I originally wrote them, for one. I wrote them ahead of time, and then I pushed the button, and they disappeared into some great mystic unknown. I then had to rewrite something in a flash, causing Larry and SonjaRose to get antsy. I should probably stick to e-mail. And least I know how to use that without screwing up, and I can patiently write without having to type 190 miles-per-hour and unintentionally coming off like a smart ass. And sorry, SonjaRose, but I didn't know how to reply to some of your messages without knocking myself out of IRC. So, if you received about 60 identical messages from me, or you didn't get any responses at all when you asked me for one, believe me when I say it was not intentional. When I am self-deprecating about my lack of computer savvy, it is not said for comedic purposes. I REALLY AM that stupid. Anyway, for anybody that was about to ask, it was not Independence Day, but it was a good time, and there was no pimple-faced usher at the door demanding $7.50 for a ticket. Alan Tucker

Alan, just to let you know you aren't alone, I have *no clue* how to do the IRC dance. I've supposedly got access to this stuff, at least I have a cute button marked "IRC" on my internet software. But I haven't learned how to use it.... CompuServe is really easy to conference in. I'm really sorry that the last conference bombed out in most people's memories. Those conf. rooms just were never meant to handle close to 100 people at a time. We should have reserved the BIG main conference room for the gig, but we didn't know it would be so well attended. Live and Learn, as Sally, Pat and I now know. Cheers, Lori

I have tons of trouble just hooking up to IRC. The problem most likely stems from my ISP, which has got to be one of the worst ISPs in Los Angeles (the only reason I'm still with them is because they are also the cheapest ISP in the nation). I will manage to get hooked up to a server (I still don't understand servers that well), then I will get dumped moments later, IF I can even manage to hook up in the first place. I use Netscape Chat. I did try several other shareware/freeware IRC programs (my ISP didn't provide me with IRC software), but none of them worked well, either. I don't use IRC that much. I have little interest in it, other than when cool stuff like this conference happens. Of course, then I forget about it and miss it. Be seeing you, Teresa CASHP #1-96 and proud!
