Continuing reviews of NwM as they air in Canada: "Without ceasing to breathe, I will have ceased to exist" That's always been one of my favourite lines. When I first saw this episode two years ago, I remember thinking the ending was pretty cool. Tom had been re-wired, his memories were slipping away, he could have been someone else, he didn't have much time left, etc. This list pointed out that two minutes of bungled exposition at the end of the episode was pretty lame. "Too much telling" said Jaes and Sandra. They were right. The episode should have built toward that, should have unfolded that. Not just dropped it in our laps while Tom drove away on the back of a flatbed with a dog (Note to Jason: I knew there was a reason that "Faith" didn't start that way...). The reflecting pool is still one of the coolest things I've seen on the show. Great imagery, that must have taken awhile to film. We could get into the symbolism, but we've been there, done that. I said last week that "Marathon" didn't really examine the impact that events were having on Tom. "Callaway" was much the same. Tom went along for the ride most of the time (except for the videotape), we didn't see that same passion for truth that earmarked the first twelve episodes. Clueheads must have loved this one, as it seemed to reveal so much of what had been happening to Tom. But for my tastes, a reflecting pool and a poetic last line just aren't enough to recommend it.
