Yes, "Starcrossed" was barely watchable. Absolutely derivative, and just shamefully bad. Typically bad in fact, which is unfortunate, as the Outer Limits usually is a cut above the crud that floods the airwaves. But to make matters worst: "Better Luck Next Time" which actually had a better story-line, was actually blasphemous, as they took excerpts from one of the best Outer Limits episode of all time, "Stitch In Time" and stiched them into the story, for no real purpose, and had the audacity to allegedly kill of the female lead character, which is entirely without grace, and typical of the lowlife writer mentality which goes something like this: Since I have no original ideas or talents of my own, I'll just fuck around without someone else's character. Hee hee!" There was no need to even include clips from that episode, especially for such a lame and demented concept as " Better Luck Next Time". The only thing good I can say is that it was better acted scripted than "Starcrossed" which of course, doesn't amount to much! Incredible as it seems, this season had at least 4 , maybe 5 absolute dogs, shich shouldn't even have been considered as episodes, let alone get into propduction! Let's see: Alien Radio, Donor, Ripper, Star-Crossed, and Better Luck Next Time...all really bad pieces of sh*t, but then this season also had 3 really excellent stories: Tribunal, Human Operators, The Shroud; and a few really strong pieces : Haven, Essence of Life, Fathers and Sons, Deja Vu...so it's not exactly going to rot, however, and I hope some bright Outer Limits executive reads this; what they did to "Stitch In Time" on a cheesy clip episode was totally bad and in terribly poor taste. Worse than last season's lame attempt to continue a good 3rd season episode: Double Helix. This was the lowest moment ever of the Outer Limits. It truly sucked!

I missed Essence of Life, Haven, and Better Luck Next Time, so can't comment on them. I didn't find DONOR an absolute dog, but it was terribly crippled by the unnecessary Fatal Attraction subplot. I felt DEJA VU was as strong as HUMAN OPERATORS, but maybe not so strong as THE SHROUD or TRIBUNAL. ALIEN RADIO had a great teaser and nothing else to offer. Horrible. RIPPER was very poor, from the bad science and old hat alien to the totally unnecessary lesbian angle, and played hob with the historical record of Jack the Ripper as well. Someone said "artistic licence", but I disagree. As well have Jack and Rose warn the captain of the iceberg and so save the Titanic as have Jack the Ripper in jail at story's end. R. Bloch's Gift for Juliette or H.Ellison's Prowler in the City on the Edge of the World would have made much better OL fodder than this sorry Ruppenthal effort. STARCROSSED was a bad ripoff with no imagination, as I've already posted. so >it's not exactly going to rot, however, and I hope some bright Outer Limits >executive reads this; what they did to "Stitch In Time" on a cheesy clip >episode was totally bad and in terribly poor taste. I don't know if ORIGIN OF SPECIES was the worst, but it was sure bad. Bad!!! In my opinion, if you take the flashbacks out of "Better Luck Next Time," it was a good show. I enjoyed the twists at the end. Michael Riley did a very good job as the man arrested for the murder, and it was fun to see Nicholas Campbell playing a cop between seasons of "DaVinci's Inquest." (Anyone know whether that was the DI set they were using? I tried to memorize a few features so that I can check when the series resumes!) To me, clip shows always convey a feeling of, "We ran over budget this season, so we had to save money on the last show." I don't know whether that's always true, but it's the way it looks. But at least this one had a stronger current story than, say, the one from a few seasons ago with the guy in Washington, DC finding evidence of an alien invasion. Patty

This sounds like you might be vaguely describing "Trial by Fire", I personally thought that episode was very well done, and completely unpredictable! A newly elected president is inform that aliens have invaded earth (or just about to anyway) and must make a descision on whether to open fire, or welcome them. Probably one of the best of either season 3 or 4 (I'm guessing there)! And....if not that, then are you refering to "Dead Mans Switch"? A man (along with 4 other people in different parts of the world) is stationed insided special built bunker for like 200 or so days, durring of which time he should recieve order from his superior to push the "dead mans switch" which would in turn, activate and deploy all the worlds nuclear weapons to annihilate whatever might be on the surface. If so, I didnt find it TO overly bad, maybe not as interesting as "Trial by Fire", but is was unpredictable, with no trick ending (as to what I remember)! I havent seen ALIEN RADIO yet, nor the THE SHROUD, and hearing the good comments said about ...well, THE SHROUD at least, I do hope its repeated sometime in the future along with the rest of the other episodes from season 5 that I missed <sigh>

"Trial by Fire" was a very good episode. And it wasn't a clip show. I was talking about....[checking Loren's guide]..."The Voice of Reason," the clip show at the end of the first season. Patty

>This sounds like you might be vaguely describing "Trial by Fire" No, he was referring to the first and weakest of the "clip shows", VOICE OF REASON.
