TOTALS AT BOTTOM. So, I've thought it over and decided I wanted to get away from a "science" ep. and go more to horror which, I think, the nOL doesn't have enough of.... I wanted an "ordinary people in extraordinary situation" story because, as someone said, many nOL eps. involve space travel/future scenarios that are extraordinary because of the setting. I didn't want a bad ep. that would need major rewriting to work (why not just write a new ep.?), or a great one because why fix it if it ain't broke, right? I wanted one "in the middle" that could be contemporized and fleshed out. Therefore, my nomination is............. "DON'T OPEN 'TIL DOOMSDAY" Set the first scene back 35 years (like the 1st one did, 1929 to 1964) in the year 1963. Make it not only the eve of the wedding, but the young man finds out his draft number has come up (Vietnam) so when he vanishes the town folk think he's a draft dodger. When cutting to the present, the bride-to-be is still waiting a la the original but she's not an old "flapper" (obviously) she is now a burned out hippie, still dressing in tie-dyes and beads. The rest could be close to the original, - maybe make the father of the eloping young girl a retired military man, so when he gets pulled into the box (after being told by the townpeople about the "draft dodger") he'll have to face his own prejudices about anti-war protestors. And perhaps the groom-to-be, whos been in the box for 35 years, WAS planning on dodging the draft (it could be mentioned in that first scene) making his reasons for staying in there not as "cut and dry" as in the original. (Did he do it to save earth, his own hide, or both?) No need to change the ending. Get Tim Burton or David Lynch to direct (ya, RIGHT!) and you've got a winner! (Azzopardi (sp?) would be my real choice...) TOTALS ON REMAKE NOMINATIONS SO FAR: Counterweight 2 Expanding Human 2 Nightmare 2 Don't Open Til Doomsday 1 Fun & Games 1 The Inheritors 1 - remade as a one hour ep, or two parts like org.? This has been a fun exercise! Any other nominees, or "seconding" on any of the above?

Though I like your thoughts on upgrading it (I even know a certain person who could pass for your old-hippie Mrs. Kry! Sheesh! ) I sure wouldn't vote for that, I felt like they got it right the first time. Though the Draftdodger stuff is good, since the whole point of that ep is "Evil is allowed no mistakes" and "Evil must live off the imperfections of others". And I think it would need two episodes, even if just dressing up the FX of the original. But there's potential for much more in the story, which would really make it two hours even if the pace was more brisk (the original, I seem to remember, was a bit sedate.) There's a lot of interesting detail that could be provided, in the form of speculative fiction about how the alien "solution" actually worked, and the motives for the aliens making it available to humans. --Ron -- http://www.intrex.net/rwgarr/
