Hmmmm... Well, first - Kari Wuhrer would die. The others would feel bad, because they're nice people; but it would be some absolutely meaningless death, because the character doesn't deserve a noble or heroic death scene. And then -- well, actually, I don't have any ideas on what type of character to put in; I just want someone who can act, and who WASN'T hired for their looks alone.

When I think of all the interesting, potential-filled characters they've written in over the past few seasons that WEREN'T Beckett, I'm amazed that the ultimate "new regular" is someone cut from this kind of cloth. Something else I haven't seen mentioned here (though I did ultimately skip 400+ messages here recently) is that ANY REPLACEMENT, given the constraints of the plot, isn't going to be from earth-prime. You'd think the writers would have worked that to their advantage rather than just glazing over it. The original three's goal is "to get home"-- so what the hell are they going to do with Beckette when/if they ever get there? Besides her inability to breathe there (assuming it was indeed earth-prime) that presents a bunch of other issues. .c-2k: If you don't know you better ASK somebody.

Some of the possibilities for an alternate replacement would be: a) The kid--I admit to being a bit dicey about this prospect, but it seemed like the writers were thinking about it. b) An alternative, non-JRD Arturo--My favorite idea, having the Sliders run into an alternative Arturo who, ala' Logan, is not physically a double of our beloved professor. c) Mary from INVASION--This would maybe tie up the whole Kro-Mags story...Mary finds the Sliders and warns them that the K-Ms are coming for them. The Sliders find someway to permenantly disable the K-M's sliding capabilities and, having nowhere else to go, Mary joins them. Mary would provide a "spookiness" to the team. with her telepathy and otherworldly air. d) Someone similar to Quinn's rival in the first season--going the totally opposite direction, with a genius who's distracted, irresponsible, maybe even a bit venal...there's a sense of exasperation, but they can't remove the yutz because he's got valuble knowledge... e) Someone from an Earth far removed from ours--like Dragon Earth...someone with a value system so different from the Sliders that there's a conflict between them and not just attitude. One of the problems with Captain DangerGirl is that she doesn't seem to contribute anything other than a killer body. What we need is a fourth Slider who alters the dynamics, either practically or socially... -- "You'll never see a more wretched hive of .c-2K and villainy." |?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|??|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?|?| TDJ |*| Tdeja@OSC.STATE.NY.US |*| Cause it's better than being a nerf herder....

My choice to replace Arturo and Maggie, hands down, would be a new female character. Make her a doctor who is John Rhys-Davies' age, that way she'll fill the gap in age and scientific background Arturo left behind. My vote to play her would Lindsay Wagner, who is an excellent and underrated actress. spoilers for "exodus".... - - - - - - BTW, I don't think replacing Kari will be a problem at all. The Sliders left behind a world of 150 people they can go back to whenever they want. All they have to do is have Maggie get sick of sliding and stay in Jungle World, while one of the other survivors of the pulsar explosion joins them instead. Personally, I think that's what the show was planning to do all along. They now have a virtually inexhaustable supply of new characters. Heck, maybe that little kid Rembrandt saved will be the new character. **************************************************** Please direct all replies to this newsgroup or zikzak23[at]pipeline[dot]com. Well, let's see, using just existing characters: If you want to shake up the social dynamic: -Brooke Langton as Daelin Richards (As Time Goes By) -Zoe McLellan as Logan St. Clair (Double Cross) -Chase Masterson as Kelly Welles (Season's Greedings) If you want a tag-along kid: -Adam Wylie as Trevor (Murder Most Foul) -Phillip van Dyke as Quinn Mallory (The Guardian) Any of these would be better than Kari Wuhrer as Maggie Beckett. Or, if you want another Professor Arturo, how about Miriam Margolyes? She played the Queen of Spain in The Black Adder. We don't think JDR should be replaced. The likelihood that one slider dies and someone else just jumps in the slot is very contrived. But that is a word that is progressively becoming more and more appropriate in describing the plot lines they are coming up with. If it doesn't change soon, our channel (or Friday activities) will. -- Respectfully, Nat & Al MaestroDC <maestrodc@aol.com> wrote in article <19970318065901.BAA08155@ladder01.news.aol.com>... > Hmmmm... > > Well, first - Kari Wuhrer would die. Previously, <bones3d-1703971817500001@news.winternet.com> asked: >If it was your choice, who would you have join them? >A little hypothetical fun... :-) They're busy ripping off shows, right? I'd make a deal with the BBC and bring in a sort of "Dr. Who" type who can slide to different earths and in totally different places - how about an Earth where the U.S. has its capital in Toronto, or where they land in Rome and the dominant church is the Muslim, and a Caliphate sits on what was the Papal throne. This could be a very interesting way to handle "Sliders. I'd either give Maggie another dimension and tone down her militaristic tendencies (which I haven't seen after "Exodus Part II because the episodes looked too dumb in the TV listings, and it looks like I was right.), or I'd get rid of Maggie altogether. Before this show gets good again, it will have to return to its roots, which is *historical changes*. They hit a roadblock when they couldn't leave San Francisco. If they could just drive a Tardis through a wormhole every week - hey, Dr. Who did it for 25 years plus. And, that drastic change in scenery between shows would appeal to the MTV audience which demands something new every 10 seconds - or at least every week here. I would try to get someone who is again the Intellectual who would add a similar rationality to the sliders plight as JRD did. That was the one thing that used to keep the whole show in check was the Professor keeping them focused on one goal, Getting Home. Quinn, Wade, and Remy are all too passionate and constantly get sidetracked by one thing or the other. Now that they have someone who is actually even MORE passionate and unrestrained with them they are no longer very believable. kyle p. Bones 3D came up with a nifty question: >If it was your choice, who would you have join them? > >A little hypothetical fun... :-) ***Sting! Ok, I'm kidding...:-) Hmm...Zikzak suggested Lindsay Wagner; awhile back James Boe mentioned Lee Majors - I like both of their choices. Since *character* suggestion may fall under the same "don't touch" guidelines as story ideas (?), I'll just list a few actors/actresses I'd find interesting: [listed sideways to save some space...:-)] Bruce Campbell; Mark Hamill; Karen Allen; Dean Stockwell; Veronica Hamel; Karen Sillas; Tom Skeritt; Anne-Marie Johnson; Stephanie Zimbalist; Paige Turco; Shari Belafonte; Marc Singer; Maria Bello...to name several. BTW, in all of your opinions, would Robert Conrad be too "cheesy" a choice? Just wondering. AnnieM

I feel his strongest assest is I believe he understands some of the theories he has explained on TV and movies... Anyway, that's who I think would have been a good replacment. Finally, I don't think I will continue with the show if they keep going with this "Outer Limits" direction. The previous seasons were more like the "Twilight Zone" from the 60's not the garbage from the 80's. So, lets hope they put the show back on course.

I doubt that Fox could afford him, but he has been willing to act in some amazingly bad films. He has the rare ability to take a role, no matter how badly written, and bring it to life. The man is amzing. I have seen him in several movies that I hated, but I still loved his part.

Despite the eventual comments about typecasting and whatnot, I'd have to see about Dean Stockwell's availability. The group needs a mentor, which was what Arturo provided. A friend of mine said they needed a leader or an adult influence, which is not necessarily so; Rembrandt can provide both of those, as can Quinn to an extent. Arturo was, for lack of a better word, their father figure. He also functioned well with Quinn in the, well, professor-student relationship. That's one of the things missing now. Stockwell, in my perfect little alternate Earth :-) , would play another scientist very similar to Arturo. What difference would there be to their characters? There could be several. He could do a variation on Al Calavicci (his character from "Quantum Leap") and not be as stuffy as Arturo; he could be a friend of his world's Arturo, who slid earlier without him and died as a result of an unstable wormhole. Play with it. But in addition to the kind of character Stockwell could bring to the show, he could also bring some class and respectability that also left with JRD. Perhaps, with his involvement, the writing would improve and/or new writers would be brought in. That's my pick. Any comments? -- T. J. Lindsey | "Do, or do not. There is no try." Wait a minute... that might work. Doctor Sam Beckett is Maggie's counterpart (a la Logan St. Clair), and after bopping back and forth in his own time line, he saves Al's marriage and vanishes (it said so at the end of QL). The thing is, there's more difference between him and Maggie than there is between Quinn and Logan. For one thing, he's got a personality. Now if we can just get Scott Bakula to trust his career to the people who've been writing the last few Sliders episodes... Oh well...

And I can just *picture* him playing "protective Dad" to Wade, as well. :-) AnnieM
