1997-03-03 00:00:00 - JRD and Sliders Future - (Adrian Appleberry <xfiles@patriotcom.com>)

Something just struck me - back in August, JRD was reported to be signed on for doing the entire third season, and he, himself, seamed quite enthused about it all - even as late as December - in TV Guide, he was quoted as saying, "I think this year at last we've had some scripts that begin to express the premise's sense of the infinite possibility... The ideas for the show are getting more ambitious. I'm very optimistic." - That certainly doesn't sound like a man ready to quit the show, yet shortly thereafter, he did. First Tracy Tome left, now JRD - maybe this will be the wake-up call the writers need to get the show back on track. As JRD, himself, said in the same interview, "Sliders can be Fox's Star Trek. Once we realize that's the case, there will be no stopping this show. And we're getting there." Sliders can be Fox's Star Trek - but will it take Fox loosing the series and it coming back on its own (with better writers and staff) for this to happen - ala Star Trek? I don't think Kari Wuhrer can hurt the premise of the show, provided the writing is good, so we certainly cannot blame her for any of the problems with the show (since they all existed before she got there). We can, however, blame the writers of this show for taking such a great premise with as JRD said "infinite possibilities" and turn it into a load of garbage. Granted, there's been some very excellent episodes, even this series, and sadly, Exodus probably was one of them (except for the brain-vampire thing - the show could have worked without that), but it's also, as others have said, had its share of rip-offs (and bad ones at that) this year. Surely the writers can be more innovative and imaginative than this. Hell, I think I could write better scripts than some of the ones I've seen this season. The good news is - it's not over yet, no matter what the nay-sayers are spouting. I'm not willing to give up on the show, as some in here are. I like the show, I like the premise, and I like the characters, even without JRD. A few top notch stories to end out the season would help in our confidence about its future. So, in conclusion, I think we should all let the Fox people know how we feel, but at the same time, not give up on Sliders just yet.... It's been dead before. Adrian

Sliders could have constantly high ratings if it followed a strict format. If Sliders stayed away from the killer worms, electric tornadoes, mind-invaders and what not, it would have incredible ratings. It should be what it says on the Official Sliders website on the Universal website, alternate dimensions where certain steps were not taken and history was changed. If FOX had let Tracy do his thing and not say no to everything, Tracy AND Davies might still be a full-fledged force in Sliders production. > Sliders can be Fox's Star Trek - but will it take Fox loosing the series > and it coming back on its own (with better writers and staff) for this to > happen - ala Star Trek? > > I don't think Kari Wuhrer can hurt the premise of the show, provided the > writing is good, so we certainly cannot blame her for any of the problems > with the show (since they all existed before she got there). She wasn't the one who said Davies must leave, Davies said Davies must leave. Kari was just a cast replacement to fill the voided spot Davies left when he decided to leave the show. > The good news is - it's not over yet, no matter what the nay-sayers are > spouting. At least record it so when something REALLY pathetic (like Pauly Shore's new show) comes on, you have the power of VCR. Or become a Neilsen family and watch Sliders WHENEVER it's on, even commercials for Sliders. > So, in conclusion, I think we should all let the Fox people know how we > feel, but at the same time, not give up on Sliders just yet....
