The Maquis attacked Starfleet. Their cause may have been right, but they're methods for achieving it make them terrorists. It was one of the bad guys who called her that in the DS9 season 4 "Return to Grace." Dukat said to her "You were the terrorist, you tell me." Having been her enemy, he would say that, and btw he probably got what he deserved in the final ep of the series. I don't agree with what he said, and I was being sacrastic in my original post. If it's a subjective thing due to choosing sides, then so be it. But I wouldn't seriously refer to Bajorans as terrorists. I would, however, think of some Cardassians as terrorists. Just a little background as to why Dukat said what he did - that's what he told her right after she asked him if it was necessary for him to destroy the freighter and all the Klingons on board it. Dukat had just blown away the freighter using the Bird of Prey that he and Kira stole from the Klingons. He and Kira started out in the freighter, and disabled the Klingon ship for a few seconds with a lucky shot using a disruptor that Kira installed. That was just enough time for Kira and Dukat to quickly beam all the Klingons onto the freighter while beaming each other and their crew to the Bird of Prey. She and Dukat were together in the first place because she was assigned to go to a Cardassian outpost to exchange secret information about the Klingon military. And Dukat was assigned to take her there in the freighter. It wasn't all serious between the two of them. They joked with each other a little. Like when Kira told him that it was "no wonder" the Cardassians were finally driven out of Bajor because the Cardassians were so busy keeping detailed records of everything like the love lives of Kira and all her friends, instead of concentrating on fighting. Dukat told her that the two of them would make a great team fighting the Klingons full time in the ship they just acquired. He even tried to hit on her. She rejected both propositions, but finally talked him into returning his half Bajoran daugther, Ziyal, back to DS9 before he went off taking on the Klingons with his new Bird of Prey. ............ The Bush's name in Vulcan language is unpronounceable by Humans but the standard English name is Viperion, as in of the viper, the branches of the bush have a snake like appearance with the bark taking on a scale-like texture when the leaves are ready to be picked. Of course the Tea is both subtle and complex and only a Vulcan can truly appreciate it, but some humans are known to enjoy it's very autumnal taste and musty aroma. Klingons are also known to enjoy the beverage after....intimate relations as a pick-me-up.

That probably depends on your point of view. I'd also suggest it depends on the nature of the cause they are fighting for, the political situation, the extent of their support amoung the people and many other factors. >Having lived all my life with the threat of IRA bombings, people who would >generally be considered real terrorists, I'm not too sure that I can call >the Bajorans/Maquis real terrorists. > >Any thoughts? I have a major problem with this whole argument. One man's terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. For example, the IRA are undoubtedly terrorists. And yet many Irish people consider them to be freedom fighters and many Americans naively fund the IRA thinking it's some benevolent organisation caring for oppressed women and children in Northern Ireland, rather than a pack of criminals and murderers intent on self egrandisment and violence for the pleasure of it. It all depends on the point of view. Having said that, the french resistance during the second world war undoubtedly share many facets with terrorist, and yet I believe that they would be universally considered freedom fighters. What is the difference? I don't know. Perhaps our view of the French resistance would have been different had Germany prevailed in the second world war and history have been written differently. Perhaps the difference is that in France the resistance were fighting against a clear and present danger from an invading power attempting to subjugate a soverign nation. Northern Ireland is a somewhat different and much less clear cut situation. Ireland and the UK are at peace, we are friends and partners, and yet the IRA consider themselves freedom fighters against the invading oppressors of the British government. It's hard to see how there can be such oppression or subjugation between allied nations, both partners in Europe and both fully fledged democracies. The Bajorans fought a war to free their planet of an external invasion that sought to oppress and subjugate them entirely, Cardassia and Bajor were undoubtedly at war and therefore the Bajoran action was a fight for freedom. The Maquis on the other hand were fighting a much less clear conflict. There were diplomatic relations between the Federation and Cardassia, there were treaties and agreements. The Maquis acted out of self interest and not the interests of their "nation". They were truly terrorist. Perhaps not as bad as the IRA, but a terrorist is a terrorist. So In my view, the Bajorans are not terrorist, but freedom fighters, whereas the Maquis are clearly terrorists. - Coconut Cream Pie ------------------- Tuvok Rules, the shapely Shammie shimmers seductively, the elegant Empress is Exquisite, always alluring Angel is adorable, amorous Allie sparkles and shines, pretty Paris Lover plays passionately, zingy Zepper is hot as pepper, Lisa is Lovely, sleek and sexy Starfish scintillates, the serene Julianna is simply Supreme, but the marvellous Micaela is magnificent. If you want a current example, the best would be the one between the Israelis and Palestinians. After the British subdivided Palestine then, placed an embargo against further Jewish immigration, the Israelis performed what were considered numerous terrorist acts. Begin, their future P.M. was hunted by the British forces as a terrorist. But with time, they became the "freedom fighters" and it is the Palestinians now who are performing the acts of terrorism. Yet, if you were to strip the names & dates from published articles between current Palestinian and historical Israeli horrors, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two. Which side was right.....which was wrong? Which was good...which was evil? In time, I truly believe they will be able to live together, and History will look at it with a cold eye and see the perspectives/causes of both groups as being just (maybe not the acts).....even while it is *impossible* to do it today. You have to remember, the Maquis are made up from members of the planets ceded to Cardassian control in a treaty with the Federation. The planets/civilizations had no say in the matter.....just two Superpowers deciding the fates of their minions. When people have no say in their own destiny, violence is never too far away. Look at the former U.S.S.R., Kashmir, Bosnia.....Hell, just spin the globe and throw a dart at it, You'll probably hit somewhere in the world where some disenfranchised people are fighting against what they perceive as their oppression. You could probably rummage through the archives an find where the British forces were trying to track down all the founding "terrorist" in the Colonies. Everybody wants a piece of the pie. One thing that does seem to happen, if a rebellion continues for too long, the idea or cause that started the original conflict becomes lost or diluted, and people just keep fighting because of the hatred taught to them by the previous generation.

Go watch "Journey's :End" (TNG). : The civilizations on each planet had a choice as to whether they wanted to be relocated or not by the Feds, but they had no say as to whether their planets would be included/excluded from Card territory after the treaty was placed in effect. The Cards said they would treat all the new ppl in the acquired terr. as newly welcomed Card citizens, but it quickly became evident that they were intent on running them off. This is why the Maquis formed; they were fighting to free themselves from Card control. The Feds fought against the Maquis because they thought it would ruin the treaty they had just signed and cause problems for them.
