If anyone is interested, there's a long article in this week's "Time" magazine about Captain Kathleen McGrath of the USS Jarrett. This month, Captain McGrath will make history as the first American woman to take a warship out to sea. She'll be taking the Jarrett out to the Persian Gulf to hunt down ships smuggling Iraqi oil in violation of the UN sanctions. I'd be curious to know what she thinks of Janeway's command technique. Until she started giving actual orders, that is. Then, the incompetence would show, just as it would for me, if I were placed in that position. But, you are right, for a while, she sure would "LOOK" like a Captain. Bob

IMO, actors playing a fictional character/occupation often come across as being more believable -- at least they behave in a way that you wish they would -- than the real thing (i.e., "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV..."). If you put Kate Mulgrew in a naval officer's uniform, I'm willing to bet she would look every bit the captain that she plays and have no problem "commanding" a crew of a US warship.
