he Queens Health Network has opened a new women's medical center in Corona. Designed to provide comprehensive health services, the new facility is at 59-17 Junction Blvd. and will operate under the supervision of Dr. Barry Brown, director of obstetrics at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Female physicians, nurse practitioners and certified nurse-midwives will provide primary and preventive care and prenatal, gynecology and family planning services. Social workers, specialty consultants, radiology and other diagnostic services will be available by referral at Elmhurst. "We recognize each woman as an individual with her own health concerns," said Peter Velez, senior vice president of Queens Health Network and executive director of Elmhurst. "We will treat each woman comprehensively with specialized care as she progresses from adolescence into the reproductive years, through menopause and beyond," Velez added. A portion of the center will be subleased to Pediatric Specialties of Queens, a private practice owned and operated by Drs. Emilio Villegas and Victor Peralta. The practice will administer pediatric services and treat patients from this new location. "This partnership is a marriage between the public and private sectors to provide comprehensive medical services to women and children in one convenient location," Villegas said. "This is a unique public/private collaboration that offers an innovative way to address the needs of the Corona community." Brown added, "We understand that women have a wide range of special needs with regard to their health, and the arrival of the new women's medical center demonstrates that the Queens Health Network is prepared to meet this challenge." The Queens Health Network is an arm of the city's Health and Hospitals Corp., which runs Elmhurst Hospital Center and the Jamaica-based Queens Hospital Center.
