Its distribution ranged from Ankaizina Mountains; Bealanana and Manirenja Districts in the north-central highlands and north of Tôlagnaro in southeastern :Category:Madagascar|Madagascar, but who knows where else it might live. It is also the only hoofed animal in Madagascar.

Possible Explanation
Surviving Malagasy pygmy hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus lemerlei and H.madagascariensis) that supposedly died off within the past 1,000 years or so.
Unknown wild donkey/horse indigenous to Madagascar.
