Sakhalin (Russian: Сахалин, Japanese:サハリン, pronounced [səxɐˈlʲin]) is a large Russian island in the North Pacific Ocean, lying between 45°50' and 54°24' N. It is russia|Russia's largest island, and is administered as part of Sakhalin Oblast. Sakhalin, which is about one fifth the size of Japan|Japan, is just off the east coast of Russia, and just north of Japan.
The indigenous peoples of the island are the Ainu, Oroks and Nivkhs.Sakhalin has been claimed by both Russia and Japan over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. This has led to bitter disputes between the two countries over control of the island. Russia seized the island from the Japanese near the end of World War II. Most :Category:Ainu|Ainu moved to Hokkaidō when the Japanese were displaced from the island in 1949.

Since ancient times, the Ainu people of Sakhalin Island and northern Japan have sighted many Kami in the seas and regions around Sakhalin Island. Three of the most known Ainu cryptids are Akkorokamui (Japanese:アッコロカムイ), Yaoshikepu (Japanese: ヤオシケプ), and Kussie (Japanese クッシー, Kushii).
In recent times, many mysterious creatures have washed up on the Sakhalin Coast. In August 28, 2006 a creature was found by Russian soldiers on the Sakhalin shoreline latter dubbed "The Sakhalin Island Sea Wolf".
According to a scientific survey, the bones and teeth are not of a fish. According to its skeletal remains, it was not a crocodile or alligator; its skull resembled that of a canine, while the creatures rear coincides with that of a fish. Its skin was covered with fur-like hair.
After the sighting, it was taken by Russian special services for in-depth studies.
Sakhalin Island Woolly Whale

thumb|165|Photograph of The [[Sakhalin Island Woolly Whale]]The Sakhalin Island Creature was a large unidentified Cetacea that washed ashore on a beach in Sakhalin Island, Russia, in June 20th, 2015. The carcass was over 11 ft (1.2 m) long, 4 ft (0.9 m) wide, and was also estimated to weigh 1/4 of a ton. It was described as having a beak, covered in white fur, and bones protruding along its sides.
Scientists have yet to identify the strange prehistoric-like "mutant", which has similarities to a dolphin but is twice as large as a human being.
Scientists claim it resembles a Ganges River dolphin, which are normally found in the fresh water regions of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
